May 13th, 2009 - Letter from Sheriff Wright:
Sheriff Endorses Second K-9 Seeks Community Support For three decades I have been involved in peacekeeping, serving the last few years as your Sheriff, and I have made this Community some promises. Among these promises was to consider the effectiveness of the Shawano County K-9 program and make adjustments if needed to maximize the benefits for Deputies and Citizens alike. I am pleased to report that our K-9 Deano has been successful in detecting the presence of illegal drugs, tracking individuals, and being ever ready to protect his handler, Deputy Prey, and other officers in dangerous situations. It is my assessment that this program should continue to serve Shawano County’s 42,000 residents and the thousands who come here to visit and vacation. Despite the effectiveness of our current program and the dedication of those involved, it has to be acknowledged that a single dog and handler cannot cover over 900 square miles, twenty-four hours a day. We have seen problems related to the use and sale of illegal drugs grow throughout Wisconsin and these influences have crept into our community. An additional K-9 would help. Recently, some have felt comfortable to commit crimes while armed. We should always have a dog, at the ready, to track them. If someone becomes lost or a child goes missing, a rapid response with all the tools possible is essential in helping secure a safe return. In short, I’d like our Department to deploy a second K-9 to help address these issues.
As everyone is aware, we live in trying economic times and money is tight. Everyone, including law enforcement agencies, has to get the most of every dollar. In support of my proposal to set a goal of introducing a second K-9 unit in 2010, I would like to inform the public that a majority of the costs of our current program are paid through the support of benevolent donors who have made generous contributions. Similarly, any consideration given to the addition of a second dog will be contingent on a majority of the funding coming from external sources.
Raising funds for such an endeavor could not be accomplished without the enthusiastic help of both the community and the “Supporters of Shawano K-9” group (S.O.S. K-9). S.O.S.K-9 is an organization dedicated to helping maintain our current program and building support for expansion. If we are to reach the goal of a second dog, they will be deeply involved in our fundraising efforts.
If you have an interest in assisting with the group, making a donation, or simply getting more information on how you can help, please call S.O.S K-9 President John LaShua at (715)851-4700. I would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support in advance. We cannot do this without you.
Sincerely,
Randall Wright Sheriff

May 7th, 2009 - SOS K9 is proud to announce a fundraising brat and hamburger cookout at the Country Store in Shawano on Tuesday May 12th from 9 am to 4 pm. Help SOS K9 raise the necessary funds to assist the Shawano COunty Sheriff's Department with the purchase of a second K9 patrol dog. In addition to brats and hamburgers, SOS K9 t-shirts will be available for purchase. Hope to see you there!
May 2009 - Deputy Prey and Deano passed standards in tracking human scent. This skill will be called upon when children go missing or individuals flee apprehension. Deano also is able to locate articles or objects that are of interest to law enforcement. These objects could be thrown during a chase or hidden before law enforcement arrives on a scene.
March 25th 2009 - We are excited to announce plans to double the size of the current Shawano County K9 division! Sheriff Wright has informed SOS K9 of the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department’s plans to purchase a second K9 dog and assign a handler in the year 2010. SOS K9 is supporting the Sheriff’s decision by raising the necessary funds to assist with the purchase of a community K9. The addition of a second K9 team would increase coverage for the county’s 42,000 citizens. K9 assistance would be available for more hours and in more areas of Shawano County. Since Deputy Prey and K9 Deano have been certified in narcotic detection in February 2009, they have assisted in numerous drug arrests through out Shawano County. Law Enforcement K9 teams assist patrol deputies as well as investigators with searching buildings, detecting narcotics, apprehending fleeing suspects and providing protection to officers. K9’s are also used for community events and are a great way to foster community relations. Donations to SOS K9 will directly support the purchase, training and equipment needed for a new patrol dog for Shawano County.
